(January 31, 2017) - Last weekend the TLR Cup Tour ran Rounds 4 and 5 at the 13th Annual Wausau 525 Snowmobile Championship in Wausau, Wisc. Previous attendance records were broken both days, giving drivers on the Tour the chance to put on a great show for a full house.
In the Pro Champ 440 ranks, it was Gunnar Sterne who stole the show all weekend. It started Saturday morning when he laid down the fastest laps in time trials and snagged a check for $525, a long-standing tradition at the track. He went on to remain undefeated in qualifying and led all but four laps in the evening's 15-lap final to bring the #220 Ski-Doo across the line in first. A close battle for second ensued between the Polaris' of Jordan Wahl and Nick Van Strydonk, with Wahl finishing just before Van Strydonk.
On Sunday, Cardell Potter was the top qualifier; an impressive feat that showed his true determination after a crash in Saturday's final left him with minor bumps and bruises. When it went green for the final, Sterne pulled a great holeshot and would leave the battle behind him for the duration of the race. Potter was in hot pursuit but ran out of laps and finished second, while hometown favorite Matt Schulz worked his way through the pack to claim the final spot on the podium.
Billy DeVault, driver of the #289 Polaris had a perfect weekend, winning every time he hit the track in Factory Stock 600. Tom Olson was the other driver in the class, piloting the #39 Polaris. With his clean sweep, DeVault returns to the top of the TLR Cup Tour points board, with Olson in the #2 spot.
Rounds 4 of 5 in the Outlaw 600 class saw a number of drivers winning heat races throughout the weekend. In Saturday's final, which got underway with a rolling start, was won by the #2 machine driven by Bob Richardson, making that his third of the season. In Sunday's Round 5, it was David Haller, pilot of the #46 machine, who claimed his first win of the season. Presenting the winning check was Shawn Plante, a member of the Wounded Warrior Project who was a guest of the TLR Cup Tour along with his two sons, who also go to participate in on-track presentations.
Next on the Tour is Round 6 in Alexandria, Minn. this weekend, with the make-up Pro Champ Round 2 race taking place Saturday morning. If you can't make it in person, catch it live on Ditch Banger TV.Back to News
